Chapter 5 · After the Check
Platform Teams
Portfolio support (module 5.1) starts as something individual investors do. At a certain size, firms turn it into a function: a platform team whose job is helping portfolio companies hire, sell, market and learn from each other. It's also one of the most accessible ways into a venture firm, and one of the least written about. This module covers what platform teams actually run, how they decide what to build first, how they show that any of it matters, and what the job looks like from the inside.
From favour to function
In a small firm, portfolio support is personal: a partner makes an intro, reviews a candidate, takes a 10pm call. Once the portfolio grows past what the partners can personally cover, firms build a platform team to deliver support at scale, so the help a founder gets doesn't depend on which partner happened to lead the round.
What platform teams run
Most platform work falls into a handful of areas. Few teams do all of them; the portfolio's size and the firm's strategy decide which.
| Area | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Talent | Executive search support, candidate networks, compensation benchmarks, hiring playbooks |
| Customers and business development | Introductions to potential customers, partners and corporate buyers |
| Community | Founder peer groups, functional communities (CFOs, heads of sales), events |
| Marketing and communications | Launch support, press introductions, the firm's own content and brand |
| Expertise | Operating advisers, office hours with specialists, vendor discounts |
| Data and tooling | Portfolio benchmarks, shared templates, internal tools |
Deciding what to build
The common mistake is building what looks impressive on the firm's website instead of what founders use. Good platform teams start from demand: ask founders what they tried to get help with last quarter, notice what the partners get asked for repeatedly, and build there first. Talent usually comes out near the top, because hiring is where early companies most often feel stuck and where one introduction can change an outcome.
The second choice is breadth versus depth: a light touch across the whole portfolio, or intensive help for the companies with the most at stake. Many firms end up doing both, deliberately.
Showing that it matters
Platform is hard to attribute to fund returns, which makes it vulnerable in budget conversations. The teams that last measure things they can defend:
- Usage. How many companies used each service, and how often.
- Outcomes. Hires placed, customer introductions that became pipeline, events founders came back to.
- Founder feedback. Asked for directly and regularly, not inferred.
- Effect on deals. Whether founders cite the platform when they choose the firm.
The last one matters because platform is also a competitive tool. In a contested round, credible help after the check is part of how a firm wins.
The job from the inside
Platform roles sit outside the investing ladder, and they're a real way into a firm: hiring often values operating, recruiting, community or marketing backgrounds over finance. The work is operational and relationship-heavy, and you'll know more founders, better, than most associates do. The trade-offs are real too. Carry participation is less common than on the investment team, and the path into investing, where one exists, is usually informal. Ask about both when you interview.
What this means for you
If you're applying for platform roles, arrive with a view on which services a given firm's portfolio needs, based on its stage and sectors. If you're on the investment team, the platform team is how your companies get help you can't personally give. Know what it offers before you promise a founder something.
